Today, the Brookfield Institute and the Leadership Lab are merging as one organization at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU).

This is in response to a shared mission to put leading policy research into action, and to develop new leaders and solutions to help Canada thrive in a digital society.

From our home base at TMU, our new, integrated policy and leadership institute will be dedicated to advancing an inclusive and innovative economy and democracy in Canada, across three preliminary areas of specialization:

  • Innovation Economy: driving a more inclusive and sustainable prosperity in Canada through innovation, including how to responsibly adopt and govern new technologies
  • Lifelong Learning: ensuring that our education and workplace training systems are equitably preparing Canadians as future-ready workers and citizens
  • Thriving Democracy: developing new and better leaders engaged in civic challenges and safeguarding our democratic systems from new threats

As one institute, we will continue to be a trusted partner of public purpose institutions and an authoritative voice in public policy conversations, providing timely and actionable research-based insights, and well-trained change-makers—building on the legacies of the Brookfield Institute and the Leadership Lab.

All of this is thanks to the imagination, leadership and vision of Sean Mullin, our founding executive director, who is moving on to his next chapter.

Since 2015, Sean has built up the Brookfield Institute into Canada’s leading authority on the innovation economy.  Sean’s insights that growth is good, that inclusion is necessary for growth, and that you need bullet-proof research and data to have inclusive growth are now hard-wired into our DNA, a set of legacies that will be carried forward into the new institute.

Karim Bardeesy will become Executive Director at the Brookfield Institute, while continuing his duties as Executive Director of the Leadership Lab, and will lead the newly integrated institute at Toronto Metropolitan University.

We will share more specific details about our plans, including a new name, in the coming months.

On behalf of both of our teams, we’re thrilled to move forward together as one unified organization with a now stronger shared mission to advance an inclusive innovation economy and democracy in Canada.  Please continue to visit the Leadership Lab and Brookfield Institute websites for updates, and sign up to the Brookfield Institute and / or Leadership Lab newsletters to stay in the loop on our latest research, events and programs.
