During this uncertain time, we at the Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship (BII+E) are grateful to the medical professionals, grocery store clerks, and countless essential services that are keeping us healthy and safe.

Our offices are currently closed and we are focused on helping our team acclimatize to a fully remote work environment.  However, despite these challenges, we intend to stay active and, where possible, continue working on projects that relate to Canada’s economic prosperity.

During this pandemic, we are seeing, in real-time, how abruptly the world can change. Shifts of this magnitude require radical thinking, new ideas, rapid responses, and bold initiatives. In essence, we need an entirely new playbook, because we have never encountered a problem of this nature before.

Our team is shifting its thinking towards how policymakers can best support the millions of people in Canada who are being adversely affected by this crisis. We are not health experts and we will leave advice regarding containing the virus to health professionals. But we do have many talented experts, who routinely work on economic, social, and innovation policy problems, and who are motivated to help shape our country’s response to the economic side of this crisis.

For a preview of some of the things we’re working on, check out the First Policy Response initiative we jointly launched earlier this week. We will focus on the social and economic policy ideas that can get Canadians through the immediate crisis and prepare us to come out of it.

Finally, when the immediacy of the health crisis recedes, we will collectively have to start thinking about how fundamentally different the economy will be once things go back to “normal.”

If you are interested in working with us, need our help or would like us to highlight work that exists elsewhere, please reach out to us at brookfield.institute@ryerson.ca.

We are in this together. Please keep yourself and your family safe.  Thank you for visiting us and we look forward to connecting with you soon.
