About this Report
On September 20, CIFAR and the Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship (BII+E) convened 23 emerging policy makers from the public, private, academic, and not-for-profit sectors in Edmonton, Alberta. This included public servants from the provincial government, not-for-profit researchers, entrepreneurs from local start-ups, and professionals from private sector consulting and technology firms, such as Deloitte and Microsoft. Edmonton was the second stop in a series of five labs that CIFAR and BII+E are hosting across the country to explore the future of AI policy in Canada. The first took place in Toronto, with subsequent labs set for Vancouver, Ottawa and Montreal.
These labs aim to raise awareness of current AI capabilities and applications, increase the ability of policymakers to respond to AI developments, and contribute to early thinking around AI policy in Canada. Overall, labs are designed to encourage critical thinking, support collaborative brainstorming, and facilitate the development of policy recommendations in relation to current AI capabilities.
